Answers to some questions I’ve been asked before:
Did you always want to be a writer? No. When I was in middle school I wanted to play tennis at the championships at Wimbledon. Now my goal is to get to go to Wimbledon to watch a match.
How long did it take you to write your book? I got the idea about Ursula several years before I started writing this book. I did some research and wrote 2 different picture books about Ursula. Unfortunately (for me), Beth Kephart beat me to a publisher. Fortunately (for you), you can read her picture book about Ursula: Good Books for Bad Children. Then I decided to write a middle grade biography of Ursula, which turned out to be about 25 times longer than a picture book! If you add up the time for more research (including researching approximately 20 authors and illustrators), writing and revising, Books Good Enough for You took 2-3 additional years.
Do you critique other writers’ work? I’m still learning how to write, so I don’t do independent critiques.
How did you find Buddy? During the pandemic I looked online for a senior dog and I found him at an animal shelter about three hours away. When I sat on the floor to meet him, he sat next to me and leaned against me. That’s when I realized he’d chosen me. He was at my side or on my lap all through the writing of this book, but I’m sorry to say he passed away at the end of last year. The best of dogs!
